More about keystone plants

Doug Tallamy

In Keystone Plants For Every Garden we learn how vital it is for us to include specific native plants in our landscapes. These plants are called keystone plants because so much of the food web hinges on their availability. Dr. Tallamy popularized the term in his New York Times best-selling book Nature’s Best Hope. In an interview done by digital editor Christine Alexander in 2021, Dr. Tallamy shared his knowledge on the importance of keystone plants to insects, wildlife, and humanity.

Listen to Episode 167

Hardly an episode goes by where we don’t mention a pollinator plant. But we have never dedicated an entire show to the topic, which is hard to believe after so many! We’re fixing that track record and discussing 11 of our favorite pollina-tor plants. Native-plant expert Cheyenne Wine joins us from Rare Roots Nursery in Virginia to add her top picks to the conversation as well. Listen now to find trees, shrubs, perennials, and even some bulbs to plant if you’re interested in turning your garden into an insect party buzzing with activity.

Meet Erin Schanen

Do you want to get things done faster in the garden?  You are not alone. We’re pleased to announce that award-winning gardener Erin Schanen will be collaborating with Fine Gardening on our social media channels to help bring entertaining, inspirational, and timely garden information and tips videos to you. Erin is the self-described “fairly impatient person” behind @TheImpatientGardener on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. We can all probably admit to being a bit impatient in the garden, but Erin takes this perceived vice and turns it on its head, showing us how to get things done both efficiently and to great effect. We are excited to work with this engaging educator and to learn just how she balances being an impatient person with honoring her garden’s natural speed. Follow us on Instagram @finegardening.
