Garden Photo of the Day

The foliage and flowers of Costa Rica, Day 1

–1–

A special treat today! Jeanne Cronce says, "I just got back from Costa Rica where I took some pictures to share. This is a beautiful country, full of rain forests and dry jungles, which all add up to the plant world. The plants we buy as houseplants here are growing down there in the wild and everything is on steroids! I took these with my cell phone and the humidity was so high I missed a lot of photos of plants. So this is just a taste of what it is like.  After spending 10 days in Costa Rica I came home to a jungle of my own!" What lovliness, Jeanne! Everything is so big and bold and colorful. You sent in so many great photos that I'll feature 14 more tomorrow! For toay, I've numbered the photos so that if any of us happen to know what the plants are, we can share our knowledge. I have just a few guesses:  #2/3: Gunnera?, #5: passion flower, #6: an aristolochia?, #7: croton and maybe a justicia?, #8: Brugmansia (Angel's trumpets), #9: banana!

What wonderful photos, Jeanne. You did an awesome job. These plants are the very definition of exotic to this east TN country girl. Love the lavender/orange combo in #4 and I'm mesmerized by the tree (?) in #12. Looks like you had a great time.

    1. VikkiVA 04/07/2015

I'm guessing that tree in #12 is a Norfolk Island Pine?
OOPS...just read where Jeff said the tree is a Norfolk Island Pine so now I know I was right :).

Hi Meander1...yep you were right. I did come back home to a jungle of my own. Weeds and all! But now that iam back, back to reality, iam glad to be here. I wish I could of taken better pics like Cherry does. But the humidity was very heavy at times and it isn't the best thing for cameras if you aren't prepared for it. Next time for sure I will be ready!

beautiuful! and you're absolutely correct,,, all on steroids. the colors are outstanding and a treat to see. i'm glad to see # 12 Norfolk Island Pine as they are supposed to look rather than the light starved houseplants we normally see everywhere here. not sure i could ever leave Costa Rica

Hey Jeff... it was so hard to come back home. Everything is so different down there and so much to see and learn about. That is a Norfolk Pine they had growing at this old coffee plantation. The real deal as they say. Yah I sort of went crazy with the monkeys! If I could of I sure would of been hanging in the trees!

Jeanne, what a gorgeous treat today! It is such a treat to see tender plants growing 'au natural'. Simply stunning. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to tomorrow's installment. Hope you had a wonderful, wonderful trip. I hope you saw butterflies and hummingbirds, too! :)

    1. greengenes 04/07/2015

Hi Tim...the trip was wonderful and hard to come back home. I saw a lot of humming birds and blue morph butterflies in the jungles. But to see other butterflies they had a garden area enclosed that you could walk around in. Its a whole other world down there!

Jeanne, I tried to pick one picture that I enjoyed seeing more than another but they are all beautiful and a joy to experience. Thank you for sharing your vacation with me. Vikki in VA.

Hey Vickie...glad you enjoy them! Its even better in person!

  5. perenniallycrazy 04/07/2015

    Magnificent!

    1. greengenes 04/07/2015

That's a good word to describe it down there. And all the bugs, frogs and birds sounded like an orchestra.

      1. perenniallycrazy 04/08/2015

..while the mosquitoes quietly bite you too. LOL.

        1. greengenes 04/08/2015

Yes, they sure did! I forgot to put put some "Skin So Soft" on!

          1. perenniallycrazy 04/09/2015

Did it work? From my experience, the only thing that does the trick is DEET.

  6. user-7007488 04/07/2015

I believe #12 is not Norfolk Island Pine, but another in the same family, maybe Cook Pine

    1. greengenes 04/07/2015

Yes, Conni it is a Norfolk pine.

  7. GrannyMay 04/07/2015

grannyMay! Yes, it was so gorgeous there. It was hard to leave.

  10. greengenes 04/07/2015

Picture number 9 is a plantain. I asked them about it because I thought it was a banana. They were great to study. Picture number 6 is a dutchmans pipe! This was so huge! And those are gunneras up in the higher elevations. Anyone want to go back there?

  11. GrannyCC 04/07/2015

Wow that is amazing!! You certainly shouldn't apologize Jeanne for using your cell phone your pictures are so clear even the close ups. Amazing what a phone can do these days. I love the dutchmans pipe it looks as if was made from paper. How big would it have been?

  12. Meelianthus 04/07/2015

Jeanne, the pictures are so other-worldly! The purple and orange in photo 4 are exquisite, you were definitely in plant heaven!! Welcome back ^_^
