Thomas Hobbs’s and Brent Beattie’s Country Garden

Special plants in a marvelous garden

Today Cherry Ong is taking us along on a wonderful garden visit.

I had the privilege of being invited to see Tom and Brent’s garden in Langley, Bristish Columbia, again this summer, and I thought you would enjoy these photos too.

dark purple poppy flowersThe first things that caught my eye were these poppies. Tom said they are ‘Lauren’s Grape’ (Papaver somniferum ‘Lauren’s Grape’, annual) introduced by Lauren Springer of Denver.

The beautiful greenhouse was custom made by BC Greenhouse Builders. I think this is Tom’s umpteenth greenhouse.

Tom is crazy over faux bois, and those planters are as gorgeous as they look in the photos.

The garden adjacent to the greenhouse is called the Stairway to Heaven, and it leads up to the pool and the old house.

This nigella (Nigella damascena, annual) and catmint (Nepeta × faassenii, Zones 3–8) are blooming together.

This sculpture is set amid the blue-green foliage and developing seeds of Crambe maritima (Zones 5–9) and the blue-green fronds of what looks to be Phlebodium aureum (Zones 9–11).

As if sea hollies—with their spiky foliage and blue flowers weren’t enough—this one, Eryngium ‘Neptune’s Gold’ (Zones 5–9), also adds a gold flush to the foliage and blooms. It’s truly a stunning plant.

Martagon lilies (Lilium martagon hybrids, Zones 3–8), with tall spires of nodding flowers, can grow in more shade than most lilies.

One of Thomas’s favorite roses is David Austin’s ‘Carding Mill’ rose.

There’s also Koko Loko from Weeks Roses, whose color change is astounding—starting red in the bud and opening to lavender.

    Oh I love their garden!
    Oh Oh Oh! The greenhouse, the faux stump with Mother Hen and Chicks, I just want to wander their garden grounds and explore everything!
