We recently visited Carol’s winter garden in Hendersonville, North Carolina (Carol’s Winter Garden), and today we’re headed back to see more of her beauties. Carol has been gardening here since 2009, and the garden has evolved and matured in beautiful ways during that time.
The tree with the small yellow flowers by the bridge in this picture is Cornus officinalis (Zones 5–8). Amazingly, Carol grew this tree from seed she collected at Longwood Gardens, where she completed their certificate courses for gardeners.
This Juniperus rigida (Zones 5–7), another incredible seed-grown tree, is a beautiful specimen. Carol says it is one of the prickliest conifers she’s ever known.
A honeybee has come by to get some nectar and pollen from these early-blooming crocuses (Zones 3–8).
Hellebores (Helleborus hybrids, Zones 4–8) start so early, and the blooms last a very long time in the cool temperatures of spring.
Hellebores come in a wide color range. This particularly dark one is incredible.
This big clump of the snowdrop Galanthus ‘Primrose Walburg’ (Zones 3–8) is stunning, with yellow ovaries and spots on the inner petals adding extra color and beauty.

So impressed with your seed grown trees! And what a cool natural branch bridge!
A springtime wonderland - and I also really love the little bridge with the branch railing. Magical!
Thank you. A specialty artist made the bridge and a couple of laurel trellises for my Clematis as well as a few benches. The natural look doesn't detract from my plants. I worked in a garden in the early 90s where there were a couple of mature Juniperus rigida. I carefully collected the fruit. Only one tree survived.
Love all the hellebores.
