Royal catchfly

Silene regia

This North American prairie native produces 2-inch-wide, brilliant cardinal-red flowers that stand out in the summer garden. The common name comes from the sticky glands below the flowers that catch small insects. The plant grows 2 to 4 feet tall and half as wide.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsRoyal catchfly can be grown in mixed herbaceous borders, gravel gardens, or wild gardens.

CareProvide average, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun or light shade. This species tolerates drought and clay soil but prefers sandy or gravelly soil. Good drainage is essential. Plants may need staking. 

PropagationSow seed in fall; in spring, root basal cuttings.

ProblemsSnails, slugs, whiteflies, spider mites, aphids, smut, rust, stem and leaf fungi.
