Today’s photos are from Barb May. She says, “I live in western Massachusetts in the Berkshires. I have lived in this house for 30 years. We raise four chickens and grass fed beef on about 7 acres. The gardens have evolved from absolutely nothing besides the prickly brush and sumac on the site when my husband & I built our house in 1981 to a full perennial and shrub garden backed up by a pool, as well as gardens all around my home and a raised-bed vegetable garden.

“I’ve always loved gardening & had a garden design/installation business for 10 years until I needed a knee replacement (I understand this is a typical gardener’s ailment!). I now maintain only my own spot. I’m a member of the Lenox Garden Club, which is a member of the Garden Club of America. I’ve been the club’s Garden & House Tour chair for many years, and I’m always on the lookout for beautiful gardens in the area.”

Beautiful, Barb! I’m betting that no one would mind a second day of your garden, with lots more photos…And if anyone knows of a garden that you think Barb should consider for a garden tour, let her know in the comments.
Thanks to everyone who sent in photos last week! I would still ove to build up a bank, so send me some pics of your garden travels or of your garden last season!

Bring on the 2nd day! Lovely!
Thanks for the great photos! The pot with the pink begonia and coleus, topped by the canna, is spectacular! I have a suspicion that coolish weather in the Berkshires lets the begonia flourish while slowing the growth of the tropicals. Here in MN where the summers tend to be hot and humid, the begonia would sulk and be quickly overwhelmed by the tropicals which thrive on the heat.
More please! Love it.
How lovely all-way around! Couldn't help notice how your
impatience were nicely flourishing as many of us on the
south side of MA have a problem with Downy Mildew.
Fabulous color combinations in your pots and throughout your garden areas. I love the exclamation points of chartreuse throughout which are then calmed by soft blues or quieter burgundies...all very effective. I'm sure you had many very satisfied clients throughout your years as a garden designer. I join the chorus in singing that I'd love to see more.
Wonderfully arranged beds surrounding swarths of well maintained lawn. Lots more photos please.
A textural and colorful delight for the eyes, especially on a deceptive 64° January day that makes it feel like Spring is around the corner!
What are the white flowers along the walkway? Just lovely. I want that arrangement this coming season. Thank you.
Lovely! (really love the 2nd photo)
I agree, BetsyE: the second photo is a stunner. I love how the the contrasts in foliage texture and color are as important as the flowers. I'm a huge fan of mixing conifers in a border. And isn't that a Japanese Garden Juniper? I yanked mine to give a weeping larch more room, but seeing your photo, it may go to the top of my must-have list for this spring. Yup, need more photos...
What lovely gardens, Barb. Your clients must have been at a loss when you retired from your 'day job!'
Love the play of smooth, sun-dappled lawn against the sweeping texture and color of the borders. More, please!
Your garden is way above average. I know a lot of plants, time ,energy, and thought go into beautiful borders like that. Your containers are just as wonderful. I really enjoyed your garden; thank you.
P.s.- I am really loving the full moon japanese maple? in the first photo.
I totally love your garden!
Barb, your eye for design is wonderful and your borders are gorgeous. The containers are striking. I would like to know if that is a full moon maple, what variety, and what zone? Looking forward to more pictures tomorrow.
What else can I add to the great comments!?! AWESOME!
CJgardens- check out davesgarden.com. They have some pictures of Golden Full Moon Maple. Barb's maple sure looks like it. ( Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' ) It is hardy to zone 5a.
cwheat000 thanks for the info on the full moon maple. I garden in zone 4 but I'll keep looking.
