Byzantine gladiolus

Gladiolus communis ssp. byzantinus

These vigorous perennials have linear leaves to 24 inches long. Spikes of up to 20 funnel-shaped, marked, deep magenta flowers appear in spring.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsSpreads from cormlets. Native of Spain, northwest Africa, and Sicily.

CareThrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. May need staking. Hardy where soil does not freeze in winter. Protecting plants with a thick, loose mulch or siting them near a wall might extend hardiness up to Zone 6.

PropagationFrom cormlets when dormant.

ProblemsProne to gladiolus corm rot (Fusarium), gray mold (Botrytis), viruses, aster yellows, spider mites, thrips, and aphids.
