Anne Barone has successfully transformed her yard and gardens in Baltimore, winning her local garden contest.
"I have lived in my house in Baltimore, Maryland, for a total of 17 years now. At that time, both the front and back gardens were in a state of disarray. The grass was removed from the front yard, ground cover was planted on the slope, and Knockout roses were planted along the steps. For spring color, I planted daffodils among the ground cover. In the back, everything was ripped out. I had a pond placed in the existing deck, a patio was built and slowly I worked on the beds and pathways. Our newspaper, The Sun, has a garden contest every year and my garden won The Best Garden in 2012."

what's not to love, Anne. Your garden is beautiful, great color and texture, and the pond, i love your pond!
Your garden is marvelous. Congrats on your award of recognition. I believe we have another GPODer who received an award from the Sun a couple of years back. I really love your water feature and sitting area. Great plants. I lived in Baltimore for two years many, many years ago. It's great climate for gardening. Nice!
You have such a charming exterior to your home (such gorgeous roof tile) and it's only right that it should be framed by beautiful landscaping. I envy your success with the large flowered alliums...they make such a wonderful statement of color and their architectural interest remains long after the color has faded. Congrats on your well deserved award. I'm sure your garden has evolved delightfully in the ensuing years and is even more worthy of official accolades.
Hi Anne, I love your charming house and the way your garden enhances it. Great use of Knockout roses and it was so smart of you to replace your front grass with ground cover, which looks so lush. Thanks for the tour.
Hi Anne, Your garden is lovely. Can you tell me what tree shades your patio?

You'd definitely get my vote! What a sumptuous yard! I love plants but just don't feel like I have artistic talent. You obviously have both.
It didn't need any explanation why you won the contest. It is colorful and full of life. Great combinations of plants. Thanks so much for sharing.
Sorry, as a Northern Virginian, I have a mid-Atlantic bias-preference. This garden is great. Its not only the plants, but the design and the flow I see in it. Need to find out where the Asian style lanterns come from!
Great example of layering of plants and color combinations for multi seasonal interest. You appear to have used all of your property to create a lush garden with nairy (southern for nary) a blade of 'lawn grass'. And if there is a weed anywhere in the mix, it appears to be a natural part of what you have done, cause I don't see any. You obviously deserved the Best Garden recognition.
Lovely work, Anne! Usually, I'm all about the plants, but I really like that sitting area under the tree, the lanterns under the awning, and the green tile behind the pond. Of course, I love your plants, too, and your liberal use of bulbs. It's all so pretty. Thanks for sharing!
Anne, your garden is lovely. Colorful, yet serene and inviting. You obviously have a geat eye for design. I especially love the pond that you've incorporated into your deck. So nice to have it up close like that, where you can really enjoy it. Thanks for sharing! Donna
What a lovely urban garden. I agree that replacing the sloped front lawn was a must-do and the result is so much more enjoyable for both homeowner and passers-by. The pond is absolutely stunning.
Thank you for sharing your lovely gardens with us! I can see why they voted you the best garden for 2012. Each year our gardens get better and better so. I love your striped awning! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
beautiful, love the purple cone flowers and the statue. great garden
Lovely! What an oasis you've created.
Wow so full and lush and colorful! Love it ?
Your garden is spectacular! Congratulations on designing such a beautiful space and thank you for sharing it.
Anne, you have made a beautiful garden. I especially like the front with the vibrant red Knockout roses. They draw the eye right to the front door. Vikki in VA
I love your first photo, with the pinks and yellows, and the one of the salvia with the yarrow, and the rose with the clematis. Putting orange and purple together takes a lot of confidence - and I sense a soul sister in you!
It looks like you are thoroughly enjoying yourself! Great job and keep up the great work!
Beautiful garden! What's the large light green hosta with the dark stripe down the middle - bottom right of 6th pic. I also love the combination of the peach rose and the clematis - gorgeous!
All the pretty stuff I love to see and smell! Living in HI for 12 years now I've adjusted to what grows well here and what doesn't! Your garden is chocked full of goodies and I love your patio on slate with that gorgeous tree supplying shade
Such a gorgeous garden. Wow. Love it
