There wasn’t a gardener around to grill when I took this photo of a cutleaf japanese maple at Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York, a few years ago. I assume the trunk didn’t grow this way on its own. Either way, who cares about the leaves? This trunk is great all on its own!
Want to see what else is great about Boscobel? Click on the second picture, of the view of the Hudson River from the main house! Live even remotely near Boscobel? I highly recommend their Shakespeare festival each summer. Bring a picnic dinner, wander the grounds and garden, and watch a performace by some highly talented actors under a tent on the main lawn overlooking this view. Heaven!

great photo!!!
A quick question. We are from Canada (Toronto area) and will be visiting Washington, CD mid-late September 2011. What beautiful gardens would you recommend we see while we are in Washington?
thanks
sorry, that should have read Washington, DC, not CD!! It's too early in the morning.
Living sculpture! beautiful!
Peaceofpie, definitely see Dumbarton Oaks! It's one of my favorite gardens, and right in the middle of D.C. Here's the website: http://www.doaks.org/gardens/
Also the Olmstead-designed grounds and Bishop's Garden at the National Cathedral.
As usual... this is a late post, but this photo really blows me away.
I don't even have words to describe how the undulating trunks of this tree make me smile. If I were there, I would just want to have the time to gaze at the beauty of Mama Nature and touch her baby.
