We don’t normally associate the urban environment with on-the-vine vegetables and rampant flowers, but the community plots in West Harlem’s Riverbank State Park are visual proof that gardening is alive and well in New York City (at least it was in summer 2009, when these photos were taken). Perched improbably above a wastewater treatment park along the West Side Highway, the Riverbank complex offers a football/soccer field, a skating rink, a theater, and a restaurant, along with stunning views across the Hudson River to New Jersey.
If gardening can make it there, it can make it anywhere.
