Today we’re in Mary Hardnett’s garden, where she’s gotten the garden ready for fall, adding pumpkins and mums, and reseeding grass as needed in the lawn, then mixing it all with the remaining beauties of the summer garden.
With annuals still going strong, adding a couple golden pumpkins brings in a fall vibe. The color scheme here is pink and yellow, with pink coming from pentas (
Pentas lanceolata, annual) and geraniums (
Pelargonium hybrid, Zones 8–10 or as annual). Yellow lantanas (
Lantana camara, Zones 8–11 or as annual), along with yellow foliage from coleus and creeping Jenny (
Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’, Zones 3–10), bring the yellow to the mix.
The pink-and-yellow scheme is here provided by a pink rose and a yellow-leaved barberry (
Berberis thunbergii, Zones 4–8).
Yellow daylilies, more pink
geraniums, and the aging flowers of
panicle hydrangea (
Hydrangea paniculata, Zones 3–9) flank another pumpkin.
A beautiful vine-covered arbor welcomes you into this part of the garden, while autumnally-themed cushions invite you to rest on the bench and enjoy the garden.
Pumpkins and a mum (
Chrysanthemum) are nestled in a mass of purple-leaved loropetalum (
Loropetalum chinense, Zones 7–10).
Pink and white pentas lie in front of an angel surrounded by hydrangea flowers.

Very pretty. Love your white bench!
So cute!!
I think my favorite vignette is the loropetalum "nest"...are the decorative objects and the yellow mum on some sort of raised element? or have you found a loropetalum cultivar that is truly a dwarf? My supposed dwarf loropetalums ended up 8 to 10 feet tall so I limbed them up to look like trees...ha, and then they died!
Oooooh such a wonderland you've created!
Magic and whimsy!
Those two modern dancing angels with the aqua lawn ball is such a pretty composition!
And oh I wish I knew the name of those trellis vines you've grown, they are amazing!
Please "reply" if you know the name of them.
Mary, your yard is beautiful. I love the way that your creative flow were festive, rich with color and strong with dimension and structure. I especially love the bed with the Chinese Fringe, Mums and Pumpkins. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work.
