Veronica W. from Bloomfield, Connecticut, is an avid plant lover who sent in these photos of some of her favorite plants.
Variegated heartleaf ice plant (Aptenia cordifolia ‘Variegata’, Zones 10–11) has pretty little red flowers all summer long, but the real show is that beautiful white-edged succulent green foliage. While only hardy in the warmest of climates, like many succulents, it is easy to overwinter indoors if kept on the dry side and placed on a sunny windowsill.
The beautiful bronze hue of this heuchera’s leaves complement perfectly the yellow and pink perennials growing behind it.
This incredible dahlia boasts not only big, beautiful red flowers but also rich, dark foliage that is nearly as decorative. More and more dahlia varieties with dark foliage are coming on the market, bringing wonderful color to a bed from every part of the plant.
This container planted with variegated purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Fireworks’, Zones 9–11 or as annual) and variegated sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas ‘Tricolor’, Zones 9–11 or as annual) works beautifully. The two plants are very different in form, growth habit, and color, but the pink flush on the new growth of the sweet potato vine picks up on the reddish hue of the grass, tying everything together.
Dahlia! These tender bulbs are the queens of the late summer garden, and don’t forget that you can easily store them over the winter to use again next year. You can even divide them to get more plants! We’ve got a how-to video here.
