Hi GPODers and welcome, to GPOD After Dark!
In case you missed yesterday (which you should definitely go back and check out here), we visited Terry Redling’s New Jersey garden filled with flowers, including many varieties of lilies and daylilies.
Hi, I am Terry Redling and live in Gillette, NJ, a semi rural suburb about 28 miles outside of NYC. We used to be zone 6b now we have a 7a garden. I am a geriatric physician by day (as well as at night when on call) and enjoy the meditation and beauty of our garden to de-stress and renew. I love all types of lilies (including hemerocallis, or commonly known as daylilies). Deer are a big issue, but the netting is barely visible and keeps the deer off the flowers. My husband Jeff and I love to spend time outside tending our property and our vegetable garden, which he built in 2 tiers over the years. We enjoy sitting by our fire pit or lounging in the hot tub surrounded by all this beauty.
Today we’re back in Terry’s garden and seeing how the space transforms when the sun goes down.
A feast of lilies and daylilies in all sorts of colors and forms! And despite the lower lighting, the petals are still absolutely glowing.
Yet another incredible lily variety, ‘Salmon Star’ (Lilium ‘Salmon Star’, Zones 4–9) has many similarities to the ‘Zeba’ and ‘Big Smile’ varieties we looked at yesterday, but in a more peachy-colored package.
If you’re looking to make your outdoor space more magical at night, some well-placed lights are all you need. Sprinkled throughout this border of lilies gives the space a whole new dimension. There are also a wealth of solar-powered options now on the market that allow you to add light with no need to run wiring or add to your electrical bill.
Terry mentioned in her intro that she loves daylilies as much as true lilies, and this variety is about as sweet as they come. ‘Strawberry Candy’ daylily (Hemerocallis ‘Strawberry Candy’, Zones 3–9) can easily mingle with more subdued colors while adding a brighter pop, but also provides great texture with its ruffled edges.
Another view of the incredible lily and daylily filled bed, perfectly placed next to the patio where you can sit and enjoy the sites and smells for as long as you’d like—a setting sun putting no damper on this garden glory.
And all conveniently located next to a hot tub?? I’m finding Terry’s physician career is that much more impressive because I’m not sure I would ever be able to rip myself away from this garden oasis.
Of course, there aren’t just lilies and daylilies in the garden. Terry has some other incredible blooms, like this bigleaf hydrangea sporting several shades of blue and purple.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with us, Terry! It was lovely to see how you’ve found a way to get the most out of your space and make it enjoyable during the day and night.
Are you a night owl in your garden? I would love to see some more gardens designed and decorated for nighttime enjoyment!
