The Orchid Show: Fragrant Selections

Discover the fragrant picks of orchids at NYBG, including one flower that smells just like chocolate

Gary Junken, produced by Antonio Reis

In this video, Marc Hachadourian, curator of the orchid collection at the New York Botanical Garden, discusses some of the most fragrant orchids at NYBG, including one that smells just like chocolate.

Beyond all the fantastic colors and patterns of these flowers, the Orchid Show also highlights the incredible fragrances some of these plants have. Perhaps one of the public’s most favorites is Oncidium ‘Sharry Baby’. Most people do not know it for its botanical name, but because of the wonderful fragrance it possesses. The flowers of this plant smell intensely of chocolate.

Some, we call them our “orchid groupies,” come every year, and the first thing they ask is “Where is the chocolate orchid?” They all want to sit for a little while and bask in this unbelievable fragrance.

The people I know don't like to put Sharry baby in their cars on the way to the show. The scent is way too strong to be a "nice" fragrance.
