Gardening Tip: Use a Reference Photo to ID Seedlings

Fine Gardening – Issue 180

In spring, I like to start my seeds indoors using a large tray that holds a dozen 6-packs. I plant one variety in each section. To remember where seeds were planted, I lay out my seed packets in the same order as I planted them in the tray. Then I take a photo of the layout with my phone. I can refer to the photo to help me remember which seedlings are growing in each section. I always place a toothpick in one of the bottom sections so that I will know which way the tray is oriented when I look at the photo.
