Wayne Decker is inviting us into his railroad garden in Chubbuck, Idaho. We’ve visited before (Wayne’s Garden Railroad), and now he’e sharing how thing are looking as spring turns into summer.
Here are my latest pictures for this year on my garden railroad. Things are starting to come back strong. My Irish moss lines the track, and my honeysuckle is a favorite with the hummingbirds. The goldfish enjoy the pond with the little stream that feeds it. Things should be in full bloom by the end of the month.
Wayne has created a whole intricate landscape around the railroad.
The small yellow-leaved sedum Angelina (Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’, Zones 5–8) looks almost like a tall shrub compared to the size of the railroad.
This train-level view of the landscape shows how small shrubs, perennials, and rocks take on the form of hills and trees.
The train goes past towering larkspurs (Consolida ajacis, annual) shooting up as they prepare to bloom.
Violas (Viola × wittrockiana, annual) bloom by the train station.
Wouldn’t it be great if violas really towered over our cars?
Blooming sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum, Zones 4–8) surrounds a little house beside the railroad.
Full-size lights engulfed in honeysuckle (Lonicera sp.) are about to burst into bloom.

I suspect this is enjoyed by all ages!
Thank you for the comment. We love when people come visit. Kids especially are fun to watch as they chase the train around the yard.
Really cool!! I had to go back to the first article about your train garden and luckily got to see the train. What a fun theme to garden around!!!
Thank you!!
Such a nice hobby to combine gardening with the trains! Usually I've seen these indoors with plastic plants- you've taken it way beyond that!
Every season gives it excitement- and the Irish moss is perfect in this train garden, and I love that the hummingbirds enjoy the train garden too!
Thank you!!
Your train garden is completely delightful, and the rail-side plantings create the perfect landscape for the imagined passengers! I can almost hear the laughter from the children that are lucky enough to visit your yard, how fun! Well done, Wayne.
Thank you!!!
