Bob Aube comes from a long line of nurserymen. His Uncle Al and Al’s four brothers started Bald Hill Nurseries in Rhode Island in the 1950s. As a kid, Bob loved going there—so much so that his sixth-grade science project was grafting Eastern white pines (Pinus strobus). Uncle Al and his brothers, however, discouraged Bob from getting into the nursery business because, as they said, “it was a hard way to make a living.” So he got a degree in economics from the University of Rhode Island and then worked in various businesses outside the horticulture industry. Despite his uncle’s warnings, Bob’s passion for growing plants persisted, and he went back to the nursery business. He’s now the owner of Morningstar Nurseries in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, a wholesaler of trees, shrubs, and perennials. Bob says, “Yes, it is hard work, but I love every minute of it!”
