When calling plant explorer Daniel Hinkley on the phone, you can never quite be sure where you’ll reach him. He may be dashing through Heathrow airport to catch a plane, struggling to maintain service atop a mountain in western China, or simply enjoying a stroll through his lush home landscape in Indianola, Washington. Well-respected throughout horticultural circles across the globe, Dan is best described as an intrepid plantsperson. When not out of the country on collection expeditions, he can been found teaching and writing about all things plants. His latest book, Windcliff: A Story of People, Plants, and Gardens, is a celebration of his and partner Robert Jones’s private garden.
