In an ideal world, everyone would be able to hire a designer to help with big garden decisions. But in reality, most of us end up doing our own design work, often without really thinking about it.

We asked three experienced designers to identify some of the principles they use when planning a garden project. The rules of thumb they shared illustrate the value of a rigorous design process and will give you some concrete ideas for making your own garden upgrades even better.
