There is a bit of sadness as the blooms of summer turn into mush. There are a few hanger-ons in the roses and dahlia beds but the show feels like it is over. Now is a chance to explore what may be a little-known group of plants.
Fall blooming cyclamen are blooming now. Many colors of white, pink, and purple scatter across the lawns and into the forests near me. They naturalize so well that they can become mats of color. Cyclamen hederifolium also have wonderful patterns on the leaves.
Galanthus reginae-olgae is a snowdrop that blooms in the fall. The wonderful white nodding flowers come up reliably when the temps cool and the rains start. There are several different varieties available from on-line Galanthus growers. If you haven’t tried them you could start with snowdrops in the fall and add other varieties (like Three Ships or Potter’s Prelude) to continue blooms through the winter until late spring.
Fall-blooming Impatiens are also a wonderful little-known groundcover. Impatiens omeiana have a patterned, shiny leaf. The blooms come in white, yellow or pink held above the foliage on nodding pedicles. A good flower for late pollinators, they spread politely across an open shady space.
