How do I protect my fruit crops from birds?

How do I protect my fruit crops from birds? My blueberries get ravaged every year, but netting is so dangerous (I had several birds get caught in the netting and perish trying to escape).

I had the same problem for years and felt sad about the birds that couldn't escape. I finally built a cage around them. It has netting but completely encloses the berries so no birds can enter. It goes all the way to the ground and is stapled (landscape staples) into the ground so they can't get under and has a door. Occasionally one finds its way in and I can open the door and chase it out.
