Is it ok to plant a Southern magnolia tree close to my house?

| Posted in Southeast Gardening on

I’ve been thinking of planting a Southern magnolia near my front porch. It will get morning sun and afternoon shade in this area. We are in zone 7. Just wondering how fast it will grow? I don’t want it to get too close to the house.

Always think about putting the right plant in the right place. This is a good time of year to plant a tree but I would make sure you plan for its ultimate size. There are smaller cultivars/selections like 'Teddy
Bear' that stay smaller (10 wide and 20 foot tall). I would still caution you to not put it too close to the house.
