Is it time to plant Sweet Peas?

FionualaModerator | Posted in Pacific Northwest Gardening on

If you live in my Zone (9b), the answer is yes!

Did you know you get amazing results here in Northern California when you plant your sweet peas in the fall?  Whether you grow from seeds or starts, you’ll get long-stemmed, fabulous, fluttery, fragrant blooms on vigorous plants – perfect for all your springtime bouquets – if you plant now.   I’ve found the earliest and longest-producing blooms to be any of the sweet peas from the Elegance series, so they’ve become my all-time favorites.  But really – have you ever seen or inhaled a sweet pea you didn’t love?

What’s your favorite sweet pea variety, and why?

I've actually planted sweet peas in the fall in my PNW garden too. It was a great experiment and they came up earlier, and bloomed earlier than seeds sewn in the spring. The only problem I had was remembering to put slug bait out around them before I could see them. Early spring is prime slug season and they do love sweet peas as much as I do. April in Paris and Royal Wedding are two of my favorites. Navy Blue was a new experiment last year and was really beautiful.

Oooh. Love ‘Royal Wedding’ - such a beauty! Great tip about the slugs…
