Lawn alternatives

There doesn’t seem to be a subject in gardening that’s more controversial lately than the grass lawn. Personally, I don’t mind my volunteer clover, violets, plantain, and dandelions, but I can appreciate the pleasing look of a pure sward. Have you tried any lawn alternatives? How have they worked out?
