Spring in the Southwest can be a lingering and gradual warm-up after winter’s chill. The crescendo of flowers and fragrance builds through February, March and April. But let’s face it: when it’s over, it’s over! How do you prepare your garden for the inevitable blast of heat? Adjusting the irrigation is one step I take in Tucson. In Fall, winter and spring I rarely run my drip system more than once a week– less if I get winter rains. But for summer, I add a second cycle each week. The main cycle waters a bit longer and deeper, but the second cycle is shorter, just enough to hold things over until the next deep watering. This has been working well for me for many seasons. What methods have worked for you during the hot dry season?
