All of Connecticut is drowning in maple seedlings! My understanding is that maples had a mast year on steroids, due to summer drought stress in 2022. Stress caused them to set abundant flower buds in 2022, which bloomed in 2023 and resulted in a ridiculous seed crop in the fall, leaving gardeners pulling our hair out. I find they don’t usually regrow if I behead them, but I’ve also spent plenty of time this spring painstakingly pulling them out of every nook and cranny. Argh!
Are you contending with this unprecedented crop in your state?!
