Nice day if you’re a tropical plant.

Happy Friday, Gardeners!
This heat and humidity we’re having makes me wish I used more tropicals in my garden. They’d be so happy today. I like to throw down (almost literally) some pieces of colorful tradescantia in bare shady spots and watch them root and take off, but beyond that, I don’t plant much in the way of non-hardy plants, at least not in the ground. Do you have favorite tropical plants you like to add to your garden in summer, either that you treat as annual or dig up year to year?

Perhaps not the most exciting answer, but I love using coleus in the garden as an annual to add color and texture. It's also great because it's so easy to take cuttings. If you get a variety that you really love, you can take cuttings before the hard frost and overwinter them by potting them up or even in a glass of water.

Coleus is quite exciting! So many colors and shapes. I like the idea of keeping cuttings in water to get them through the winter.
