Propagating Houseplants

LSweeney_moderator | Posted in Mid-Atlantic Gardening on

Since there’s not much to do in the garden in the coming months, it is a good chance to spend a little time with your houseplants! Have you tried propagating any of your favorites?

Great topic! I'm doing a little house plant propagation now to give gifts for Christmas.

Nice gift idea. I have my grandmother's African violet, which would make a nice gift for my family members. I'm going to get on propagating it, even if they don't sprout in time for the holidays.

I confess I'm a compulsive houseplant propagator. I particularly like trying to grow them from seed and have had good success with seed collected from epiphyllum, calamondins, sinningia, and a few palm and cactus species. Such a pleasurable winter endeavor!

Many years ago, my college friend and I bought a holiday cactus from the grocery store to brighten up our freshman dorm room. Just propagated a big cutting from it for her older daughter, who is now in college and a budding plant enthusiast.
