I was visiting a friend last week and she was eager to show me her neighbor’s magnificent dawn redwood (metasequoia glyptostrobides). I was struck by the pride and pleasure the owners clearly take in this specimen tree, planted by a grandmother. I felt like the tree was a family member itself.
