The damn marine layer

| Posted in Pacific Northwest Gardening on

Can you explain how I might use the frequent marine layer in our region to my gardening advantage? It seems to me it just causes me headaches like never getting tomatoes to ripen. Are there benefits I’m not realizing?

Yes it can be a problem for things that need full sun and warm air. Many people I know grow tomatoes under cover in a greenhouse which can be either a proper glass house or polytunnel. This has the advantage of keeping the air warm and the tomatoes a bit dryer. The defused sunlight still gets through. The benefits are moisture-loving shade plants grow really well here. Hydrangeas are amazing because of the added moisture in the air. It really is a case of 'Bloom where you are planted'.
