What are some lesser known plants for hanging baskets?

| Posted in Midwest Gardening on

I’ve been using the same plants in my summer hanging baskets for a while now. I love my picks, but this year I’m finally bored of my usual selections. Any flower recommendations to freshen up my hanging baskets next year?

Sorry for the late reply! Have you considered some fun trailing foliage plants for your baskets. While I love colors provided by various flowers, the baskets can start to look tired in late summer. I'm a huge fan of Dichondra 'Silver Falls' as an amazing silver trailer that goes well with everything. The benefit of the "foliage trailers" is having a great appearance all season long!

I tried winecups (callirhoe) in a basket this year and since it's perennial, I planted it out in my garden once it began to wane in flowers. It bloomed a long time and is tolerant of missing a few waterings! I think I'd try combining it with something silvery next year, like angel wing senecio.
