What are the best native maples with really good fall color?

| Posted in Northeast Gardening on

I’m getting excited for fall and want to put something in my garden that will really pop. Any suggestions?

I'd go with a sugar maple rather than a red maple because they make for stronger trees with better branching and tougher, less easily damaged bark. Of course, they get huge! But there are some slow growing and smaller cultivars. 'Lord Selkirk' and 'Inferno' both stay a bit smaller, and then there's Millane's Dwarf', which is both small and has amazing color. In the red maples, I like 'Brandywine' which gets an unusual purple red color, often more like a sweet gum or sour gum.
