When I go to the garden center to pick up potting soil, I’m always overwhelmed by the options and never really know which is best choice for my containers. Are there really any difference between all these brands and if there is, what is the best for container gardening?

Great question! I agree that the variability is significant and it's tough to know what is the best purchase for your money. The term "potting soil" is a bit ambiguous as the contents within the bag encompass a wide range of materials. When I consider "potting soils", I like those that have a lighter weight and good drainage due to the incorporation of peat moss, shredded bark fines, perlite and vermiculite. A potting soil shouldn't be heavy or dense as drainage is so important in the container. I actually customize my own potting soil by using a lightweight potting mix (many brands) with my own compost at a 2 to 1 ratio. My compost adds tilth and nutrient value to the mix and the drainage is still excellent. If I'm growing annuals in these containers, I may also consider a slow-release fertilizer to give plants a boost through the summer. It's a tough question to answer as there are SO MANY options but if your local garden centers are selling or displaying containerized combinations, ask them what they're using!
