Winter color

marti_n_midwest_moderator | Posted in Midwest Gardening on

Winter has settling in my gardens in Omaha.  Since my personal garden is small I have to enjoy the joys of big color in the gardens I design for others.  I recently went to one of my larger properties to cut some stems for my winter pots.  I was so pleased to see the display of Redtwig Dogwood (Cornus sericea) against the evergreen foliage of various varieties of Spruce (Picea sp.).  What are the favorite colors of winter in your area?

I like the ghosts of hydrangea flowers. That reminder of lost summer glory is so poetic. While it's not winter color exactly, I love seeing the flower heads rolling down the street like tumbleweeds!

Definitely winterberries, my favorite winter color.

I haven’t seen Winterberry in a long time. Used to plant it fairly often, but when broadleaf Holly started doing better here I began using it. I will have to plant winterberry again. What variety do you like?
