December in the Midwest is a great time to examine the landscape and see what, if any, plants are still providing food for birds. While we certainly supplement diets for our feathered friends with purchased seed, there are some great woody plants that can provide interest and value for wildlife in the frigid winter months.
I’m a huge fan of hawthorns (Crataegus sp.) as they are at the top of the list for my “bird supporting” clients. The ‘Winter King’ green hawthorn (Crataegus viridis) is a personal favorite with a profusion of white, spring blooms and lots of larger, red-orange fruits (photo below).
While hawthorns have their share of insect and disease issues, well-placed and well-grown specimens are excellent ornamental additions to the landscape and significantly support wildlife.
Do consider examining your landscape for more “nurturing opportunities” in winter!
