Saroj Sawhney's garden in Shyamkhet (a hill resort that is 6000 ft above sea level in North India – 300 km North of Delhi) is a "carefully careless" planned garden.is a "carefully careless" planned garden. We do hope Saroj sends more photos!
"Built in the early nineties the once rambling steep hill turned into a Carefully Careless planned garden. We now are surrounded by bee boxes. Apple trees are ready to fruit next year. Tea plants, citrus fruits, rosees, fushias, hydrangeas, oriental lilies etc."

Wow Saroj, did you make the stonework? I love the pattern. The plants are beautiful and I'm so jealous of your clivia! Your dog seems to enjoy being out there also. Smart dog! Thanks for posting!
I agree the stone work is quite charming. Lovely assortment of containers. Wonderful place for reflection.
I love the rumpled quality of lots of gardens in India, including this one. Restful in a way that clipped hedges are not....
Saroj!!!
I just THOUGHT I had a lot of containers holding treasures, and I DO, but you've got me beat by a long shot!! I was wondering: If you have citrus and tea and apples, why so many containers in such a benevolent climate? May I assume it is to contain more soil in your sloped site? That drop off in the first picture isn't a hill....it's a vertical wall!!
I'm with jesse in being agog at the abundance of your containers...all your plants look incredibly happy in their individual homes so they must thrive on being spoiled. Do you have to water on a daily basis during the heat of your summer or do you get plentiful rainfall? Your stonework is quite artistic. Did you do it yourself? The result is very pretty.
Saroj, I do love the way you have created a beautiful level patio and paths out of what look like random stones. Were these stones right from your own property? How are they kept in place? I also wonder if the reason for so many pots is that there might be difficulty digging into the edge of a steep hillside.
Lovely lush colors! Thanks for brightening my morning with your beautiful plants.
I am an avid gardener from Ontario, Canada. When I was planning my first trip to India, also visiting my friend in Delhi, I asked if I can see some gardens. She laughed "gardens??? in Delhi?". I have seen Government landscaping around their buildings and was lucky to be there when President's gardens were open. Hundreds of employees were needed to work on it around the clock. Gardeners elsewhere have no idea how difficult it is to have a garden like yours in Delhi. Soil is not suitable for growing anything and rain season comes only once a year. Only way to grow anything is to grow it in containers in special soil and take care of it every single day. It is truly labour of love. You have my admiration for creating such a beauty around your home. I am going to Delhi again in November and I will be thinking about you. Wishing you all the best!
Thanks for that extra info about the gardening challenges in Delhi. It was very interesting and now I have an even greater appreciation for Saroj's commitment
Saroj, what a wonderful place you have. Colorful flowers and pots along an inviting stone walkway. Please send more pictures. Bees and all.

Lovely! More photos please!
Saroji, your garden is so beautiful. I like how your home is up on the side of the hill but I can see that you do have a challenge in making a yard. You have done a terrific job of creating a lovely garden. The stone work is splendid. Did you do it yourself? Thank you for sharing the pictures with us. Would love to see more.
Oh, such beautiful stonework!
