Today’s photos are from Carol Thompson, who shared photos of blooms in her garden back in 2011 (refresh your memory HERE. Carol–still waiting to see more of your garden!) Carol lives down in North Carolina, and is sharing our second bridge-themed garden of the month (revisit the one in Massachusetts HERE.)
She says, “My daughter’s destination wedding was the weekend of September 13th, just a few weeks ago, in Hickory Nut Gorge, North Carolina, near Asheville. Going to and from wedding events that week, I just about drove off the road gaping at the flowers along the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge every time we passed by.
I wish I could have captured the beautiful panoramic setting for you. Massive Chimney Rock (now a state park) looms upstream and Lake Lure is visible downstream, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 1925 historic bridge is 155 feet long and 20 feet wide, and flowers are planted along its entire length. It is truly the gateway to somewhere beautiful! I only had my cell phone with me – sorry some of the most beautiful images are blurred.”
Carol, this is lovely! I did some research and found their website HERE, where there’s lots more photos! (If anyone else has visited, post photos in the comments.) I LOVE LAKE LURE! i have spent many many many wonderful weekends there and have never been disappointed. all beautiful and i love this bridge. pack up, head to Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Bat Cave, yes, that's where it is.

PS Why is it named Lake Lure? (as opposed to Allure).
Great question! I read the developer, Lucius Morse's wife Elizabeth, is credited with naming the lake and the town. Now that you mention it, It must have been a play on words!
I love their dedication plaque and the tag line "The Gateway To Somewhere Beautiful". I think that's how we all feel about our gardening efforts... whether big or small...costly or on the cheap...brand new or long established...something is touched within us. Ha,I like the repurpose of the old iron ashtray as a birdbath. To bad we are visiting South Carolina not North,this I bet is beautiful in person.congratulations to you on your daughters marriage. Our daughter was married Sept 18th fours years ago and a week ago Friday we had a sweet baby boy arrive (pure joy) We love being Grandparents 4 times

I'm a bit late to the party today. Been in a conference all day, but this is a great visual to end my day. Definitely on my list of places to visit. Maybe Christine and I will head up for our anniversary in a couple of weeks. There are some very creative plantings here. Thank goodness for gardening volunteers to make sites like this possible and available.
