Garden Photo of the Day

Patricia’s upstate New York garden in late summer

We first visited Patricia Hand earlier this summer (refresh your memory HERE), and today she's back with an update, including some photos of the greenhouse she mentioned and we begged to see! She says, "Fall is definitely in the air here in upstate New York. Some of my container plantings are still holding on as well as annuals in the gardens. Late summer and early fall perennials are now in full bloom. Sedum 'Autumn Joy', obedient plant, and anemone, along with asters, are among them. The fragrance of the sweet autumn clematis is so wonderful right now. We had a great growing season this year. It's hard to believe that I will soon be putting these gardens to bed!" Of the greenhouse, she says, "My greenhouse arrived in October of 2011 in kit form. My husband, Dudley, and our son, Eric, assembled it in 2 days time. I helped with the finishing touches. I couldn't wait to start planting! I immediately started some lettuce and spinach seeds. We were eating these greens right up until Christmas. I shut down my greenhouse for the winter and start up again in March. I can take cuttings of my favorite tender plants, which I over-winter in our sunroom or basement, and start new plants in the spring. It also gives me great pleasure to experiment with new seed varieties." Wow, your garden still looks so nice, and tidy, too, Pat! That greenhouse is DREAMY.

****HEADS UP!!  ALL 15 PHOTOS are in the comments, in expandable form. Everyone, let me know if you'd like me to post like this from now on, until we get the enlarge function up and running. Thanks!****

Fall gardens are wonderful and Patricia, yours confirms it! Someone loves begonias! They are all so beautiful. And to have a wonderful greenhouse like that, oh man! It sounds like you are earning your "Gardener Scout " badge! I enjoyed seeing your gardens once again! Thanks and happy gardening!

in this photo, what are the tall purple flowers on the right? I have them in my garden, but do not know their name. thank you

Keep in mind that these are small photos to begin with. Bigger photos will be much bigger when enlarged.

I love being able to see the sharp photos. They work differently in my mail program than they do in a web browser, so folks who have the option might experiment with where the comment attachments work best for them. Thanks Michelle!

First two words that come to mind Patricia: Greenhouse Envy! Seriously, I love all the floral fireworks you have going in your garden. So much of your passion and vision seen through your perennial and annual plantings as well as your edibles. Hats off to you and the family!

Thanks for taking the extra time to share the expandable photos Michelle =).

@michelle_gervais:disqus, I kind of liked the form you were doing previously, to be honest, but this works.

Hi, Patricia, these lovely and flower filled fall pictures show you to be a gardener who plans and plants for as many seasons as possible. I love the effect your autumn clematis has ...like a frothy gentle wave lapping the shore. I'm super impressed with how productive you are in your greenhouse...must make your husband very happy to see you working away industriously or puttering happily in there.
Well, Michelle, I didn't see any difference in the size of the photo when clicked on it or did I misunderstand? Today's approach is easier to scroll through so that's a good thing and i appreciate you going to the trouble. I have to admit that I'm still a fan of your original format but I guess that ship has sailed, right?

    1. MichelleGervais 09/15/2014

These photos were very small to begin with, so you won't see a lot of difference. Tomorrow's will show a huge difference.

Actually, when you click on these, they do not expand at all, unlike the ones PC posted. They expanded nicely.

    1. MichelleGervais 09/15/2014

Marsha--tomorrow's post will be better--I uploaded much larger photos.

thanks, Patricia! i do love a fall garden. i don't know if the colors and plants are actually more vibrant or if i know they will all soon be gone for a long time. that greenhouse is snazzy! i'll have to see bigger pictures before i make up my mind.

Hi. What are the peach colored flowers in the wooden tub? I love them! And of course, I love your whole garden; it's beautiful and very well kept. I can tell you put a lot of love - and work! - in it. Congratulations :)

I like the older format better, but this one works too. Assume comments will show up with the pictures if they have been submitted along with them.

Looks great, Patricia. Have fun with your new greenhouse. Like Carmela, I'm crazy about the floriferous orange begonia(?) in the tub. Do you know the cultivar name?

    1. Nurserynotnordstroms 09/15/2014

Hi Tim I just sent Michelle up dated garden photos last night. I included one of my pots I did with the left over stacked stone wall rocks used in the pot. I usually do simple pots not a lot of colored flowering plants. I won't know when it will post it's always a surprise. Fall is soon upon us, what projects can we come up with now...... Ummmmm

I look forward to seeing them! I think I came up with projects for this fall last fall...... :)

Hi, how fantastic to have a greenhouse and such a capable family. Your setting and gardens are gorgeous. I'm hoping to get my college aged son to help with a water feature. I too love 'Sparks Will Fly' begonia. I was told it will produce tubers so we can start it again next spring. Patricia, is your garden area fenced to keep deer out? I can't tell if there is netting or wire on the wood fence. Are they a big problem in your rural area?

  12. NWAgardener 09/15/2014

Patricia - you have such a spectacular view and your beautiful gardens enhance that view! I, too, have greenhouse envy. :-)

Michelle - I prefer the older format. I don't care for the way the pictures run together. I'm willing to wait until you get the "enlarge" feature up and running. I know it's difficult to please everyone and I truly love GPOD and look forward to it every weekday morning. Thank you so much for your fine work!

Patricia, your last post demonstrated that you have a wonderful talent for creating beautiful flowerbeds. Seeing your garden transition to early fall proves that you definitely know what works for all seasons! I look forward to many more photos. And thanks for satisfying our curiosity about your greenhouse. Yes, I have caught the greenhouse envy bug as well.

Michelle, thanks for trying the new format. Too bad the original photos were small, so we didn't get any benefit from it this time.

  14. Nurserynotnordstroms 09/15/2014

Michelle thank you so much, it is so nice to see these beautiful gardens in a clear photo. This is another example of a lovely garden. I enjoyed these pictures so much thanks to you Patricia. That's one of the things I am lacking in my gardens is a green house. Sadly we have no room since 1/2 of our property is straight down in a ravine.

  15. azulverde 09/15/2014

Patricia's garden looks like it is not ready to go to sleep yet and I can imagine that with that greenhouse, she would have an expandable garden next spring.

I like the previous format better because it takes an extra click for me to go to the next picture if I try to expand the photo but it won't. If I scroll down to view the pictures, the adjoining photos distract from the photo on focus. But I'll take anything that comes, either way will work for me, I'm not hard to please. Thanks for the efforts, Michelle!

So are we thinking that I need to do both the scrolling slide show up top and then repost the photos in the comments?

    1. User avater
      Tim_Zone_Denial_Vojt 09/15/2014

If it is quick and easy to upload the photos in both the slide show and the comments, that should satisfy everyone until the slide show has the added functionality of a pop-up to high-resolution. IMHO.

  17. schatzi 09/15/2014

Oh my yes! to all the comments on this gorgeous garden. I too love the orange begonia and the Anemone japonica. I especially like my white one because it looks so fresh and bright when the rest of the garden may be looking tired. Michelle - thank you for all your efforts - I look forward to this post every day and consider you all friends. We are kindred spirits. The photos running together is minimally distracting, but the sharpness and clarity make up for it. Many years ago when we built our home, we built a greenhouse around 2 sides of the living room. I have a shelf outside the living room window to display plants in bloom. It is unheated, but in this climate (PNW) I can over-winter my tender plants without additional heat most winters. I love having a greenhouse and all of you will too when you build yours. Scrap wood and re-usable windows will do it - it doesn't have to be fancy. Thank you to all who have submitted pictures for our enjoyment and to Michelle for doing this.

Goodness, what a pleasant view heading into Fall. The obedients are glorious, just too bad they are so invasive here in NC. I don't miss that part. But it is nice to see yours. Great colors all around your garden. Awesome teamwork on the greenhouse too. Thank you for sharing.

Your fall garden still looks very delightful, Patricia! It is clearly a well-tended and well loved garden. You are sure making the most of your wonderful big greenhouse!
Michelle, I find the pictures running together distracting. I prefer the old format.
