Corylus is a genus of a dozen or so species of deciduous shrubs and trees from woodlands in northern temperate regions grown mostly for their foliage and catkins. Some also produce edible nuts. Use in a shrub border or as specimens.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsNice foliage; yellow catkins.

CarePlant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil that is preferably alkaline. Remove suckers. Grow plants with colored leaves in full sun.

PropagationSow newly ripened seed in a seedbed. Cultivars may be grafted in winter or layered in fall.

ProblemsBud mites, tent caterpillars, webworms, powdery mildew, blight, canker, dieback, mushroom rot rot, fungal spots, and rust may affect plants.
