Sawtooth sunflower’s abundant yellow daisy flowers bloom from late summer well into fall. The dark green, narrow leaves have a leathery gloss. A well-behaved plant, sawtooth sunflower forms a thick, slowly expanding clump. It can reach 10 feet and taller, depending on conditions.
Noteworthy CharacteristicsAdaptable to a variety of growing conditions. Contrasts nicely with ornamental grasses and other perennials in a border, even when not in bloom. Native from Maine to North Dakota, south to Virginia, west to Oklahoma.
CareProvide support if necessary. Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun.
PropagationSow seed in containers in spring in a cold frame. Divide in spring or autumn. Take basal cuttings in spring.
ProblemsDowny and powdery mildews, canker, rust, and many fungal leaf spots are quite common. Caterpillars, cutworms, beetles, and weevils may attack plants.
