Garden Photo of the Day

Untermyer Gardens Restoration

Thanks to Batya Gorin for sharing this wonderful garden which is being restored. I think I know where I'm going for my next day trip!

"These are photos from Untermyer Gardens, where I am a docent.  This is a little known 43 acre park in Yonkers, NY (lower Westchester County) whose 100 year old gardens are being restored.  You can come on your own or take a tour.  It's gorgeous in all seasons and it's history is very interesting, as well.  (Visit untermyergardens.org for more information)."

This is lovely and so noble a garden! I love the view of the Hudson River... I used to live in Westchester, and applaud the revival of its history. Wonderful of you to share your time and gifts as a docent. Thank you.

I not only enjoyed seeing the pictures you selected, Batya, but following the link to read about the history of this garden. Mr. Untermyer and his wife certainly gave a lot back in service to their fellow man and, also, along the way, indulged in their passion for creating a beautiful garden. I am very curious about what creates the breathtaking wall of green over the end of the waterway in the 4th picture down. Are they weeping beeches which was mentioned in some of the website copy as being part of the walled garden?

They are weeping european beeches - right now we can't wait for them to leaf out!

Thank you for the identification, Samuel. Based on your name, I assume the original creators of this garden are either in your family tree or a representative of the garden has been kind enough reply to my query.

I am one of the gardeners at Untermyer. As someone who works in the gardens, i get to appreciate the beeches for their beauty AND their wonderful cool shade on hot days :)

Thanks for sharing this historical garden with us, Batya. I'm glad to see that the interest in such old grand gardens has revived and that many are slowly being restored.

You are one lucky person, Batya, to be a docent at such a lovely garden. That wall of weeping trees ( Beech?) at the end of the pool is impressive. Thanks for sharing this and now another one goes on the long list of 'must see gardens'.
